Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

Back when the original Narnia movie released I saw it opening day while vacationing in London and I loved the film. So one can only imagine my excitement for the sequel which opened yesterday and I had to see it as my birthday movie (which is tomorrow by the way...)

It's one year later and the kids are having trouble dealing with being back in the real world and 30 years younger than what they were in Narnia. Back in Narnia Prince Caspian's uncle has a new son and wants Caspian dead. Caspian is whisked away and blows a horn that brings back our young heroes.

Narnia is no longer the beautiful world we saw once before and now it lays in ruins. Despite a PG rating this is much more violent than the original film. Mice cut the throats of men and I think the lack of blood is the only reason the film gets away with it's rating.

The cast does a great job of keeping the film moving which is hard to do when you film runs for 2 hours and 2 minutes but time flies by.

The battles are awesome and epic, there is a totally badass stealth segment that rocks and the special effects are great. It does seem to follow the general outline of the book but the end is rather vague with a weird explanation that has no explanation for the third film.

Either way you owe it to yourself to view this film on the big screen. Hopefully we'll have the third movie before the kids get too old.

Made of Honor

Like so many other things in the world, the romantic comedy requires a little tact. Sadly this one does a gender swap on My Best Friend's Wedding and while in a sense it works, it also feels tired and overdone.

On a twist of roles we have a man who is a womanizer and he falls for his best female friend when she decided to go to Scotland for a trip. She comes back and she is engaged and asks our hero to be her maid of honor.

Yes, it sounds dumb and it is a dumb idea. But then we get the cute little scenes where he tries to dig up dirt and of course we get the happy ending with bunnies, rainbows and flowers.

Are you a woman? Do you watch Grey's Anatomy? How about, are you a gay man? Are you in love with McDreamy? If you answered yes to any of those things then see the movie. otherwise avoid it because it's nothing special or even worth the time.

Deception

I really thought this would be the first film I'd miss out on but thankfully someone answered my prayers. The problem was that it left my theater after two weeks and the second week only had two showings.

Anyway, this is a remake of a film based on a broadway show. I haven't seen the original source material but I can bet it didn't contain a sex theme like this one.

The main problem with the film is that it assumed the audience is dumb and with a title like Deception one should feel deceived throughout the run time. That isn't the case and while there are twists and turns, the film rarely surprises as everything is so predictable.

The only saving grace is the cast but I'm a big fanboy of Hugh Jackman and I watch anything he does. But still I'm going to have to say pass on this title in the theater and on video as it isn't worth the time. maybe when it's on basic tv for free you can give it a glance but otherwise avoid this one.

Baby Mama

Baby Mama actually looked good from the previews and it's been a shit bag of a year so far for comedies. I could sit here and say this is a brilliant masterpiece but to be frank it's just a well done comedy.

It follows the tale of a woman who can't get knocked up so she go and has her eggs put into a trailer park chick blah blah blah. The plot is decent, it has soem nice twists and turns, most predictable but they work and don't come off as poorly done.

Acting is great, the jokes tend to always work and the one liners are solid, something recent comedies have really been missing. I just have to give this film a pretyt high nod. Check it out in the theater because Tina Fey rocks!

Speed Racer

I saw Speed Racer on opening night. I have never seen the cartoon and to be honest only the original Matrix film was worth while.

I actually slept through the first 30 or so minutes of the film. It's all back story, an overload of back story to be honest and it drags the beginning on forever. Past that the film picks up with some corny goodness, monkeys, awesome races and ninjas.

Did I mention this film has monkeys and ninjas? You require nothing else in a film. The races really make the film fun with their animated look and feel and the energy in them is great.

It's like a live action cartoon almost and it's entertaining. it might be a little long for most kids but this might be worth seeing in the theater for the people who grew up with the cartoon or love these type of films. Otherwise I say wait for a rental.

What happens in Vegas...

I hate Ashton Kutcher but I like Cameron Diaz. Here's the thing, I saw this film before it came out and just felt no need to review it. The film lacks anything to make it worthwhile.

I know it sounds silly but the film is mildly funny but it some how follows every cliche and with such a mediocre ending I can't take it any more.

The laughs are solid, the cast does a fine enough job but I don't know. I just couldn't get past the mediocrity of the plot itself. Two people get drunk, married in Vegas and end up winning 3 million dollars. They must stay together for 6 months and then they can split the money. blah blah blah. Rental not a theatrical viewing.

Iron Man

I had some mild interest in this film. I love a good superhero film but lately they are either hit or miss. Following along the lines of The Hulk from a few years ago, this film focuses more on the back story of the character and bringing him full circle.

I like the idea but Tony Stark is a rather boring guy and Downey portrays him in such a way that I became annoyed by how over the top it was. Rest of the cast is alright but Jeff bridges steals the film.

My real problem is how slow the movie is. Yeah, it opens with a bang and all but we saw that in the preview and really the entire first hour or so can be gathered from the previews. The film lacks action and the big finale is a little luke warm and not as entertaining as it should have been.

This is the first film of 2008 that requires you to stay after the credits to see a scene that sets up the sequel in a big way. I can't fully recommend the film but it's a decent effort and a some what decent start of the summer blockbusters.
