Diary of the Dead (Bonus Review)

Romero is a god to so many fanboys it is amazing that Diary of the Dead didn't get a wider release. having hit a measly 54 theaters in North America it's easy to see why so few got to see the film.

I finally saw the film after hunting for months but let me say this, I thought Land of the Dead was horrid so this title could have been hit or miss for me. Thankfully it's a hit for me but it isn't without its flaws.

Some student film makers are out making their own horror film when they hear news of the zombie epidemic. The film seems to take place in or around North East PA (which is where I live oddly enough) and it's done in a Blair Witch style but way too professional.

It's weird but in sequence this film doesn't make any sense. While the other movies could all be kind of tied together this films present day timing kind of loses all possible connections with the original trilogy.

That's okay though because the plot doesn't matter. We are told to like these more human characters but at times their dialog is delivered in stiff doses and most aren't likeable.

Where Cloverfield was able to make you care about it's main cast I had no real connection with these guys trying to survive. But don't take this all the wrong way because it's a highly entertaining film and it is worth checking out, it just has some flaws and when a film comes from the master creator of a genre then you tend to expect more.

One final problem is the special effects. They rock most of the time but there are a few bare chested men shots that look horribly fake and when shot into looks even faker, which ruins the feel of this all being real.

Entertainment Value - 4/5

Movie - 3 1/2 / 5
